The United Nations Is Born
On October 24, 1945, the United Nations Charter officially came into force after being ratified by the required number of nations, marking the birth of the most ambitious international peacekeeping organization in history. Rising from the ashes of World War II and the failed League of Nations, the UN was designed to prevent future global conflicts through collective security, diplomacy, and cooperation. Its founding members — 51 nations — hoped to create a forum where the world's disputes could be settled with words rather than weapons. The organization has since grown to 193 member states and remains the central institution of international law and humanitarian coordination. October 24 is celebrated worldwide as United Nations Day.
