Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
On October 26, 1881, a 30-second blaze of gunfire in Tombstone, Arizona transformed a local lawmen's dispute into the most famous gunfight in the history of the American West. Wyatt Earp, his brothers Virgil and Morgan, and the consumptive gambler Doc Holliday faced off against the outlaw Clanton and McLaury brothers near a vacant lot behind the O.K. Corral. When the smoke cleared, three outlaws lay dead and both Morgan and Virgil Earp were wounded. The confrontation — rooted in months of simmering tension between Tombstone's law enforcement faction and the Cowboys gang — became the defining myth of frontier justice. Dime novels, films, and television shows have revisited it endlessly, cementing the Earps and Holliday as icons of the Wild West era.
